Fidan Urges Europe to Take Charge of Its Own Security

(MENAFN) Türkiye’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan emphasized on Monday that Europeans must safeguard their own security, describing it as “an existential need.”

“As Europeans, we are all in the same boat. Ensuring the safety and security of our own home is an existential necessity. We cannot delegate our own security to others,” Fidan declared during his remarks at a gathering of ambassadors in Lisbon.

He noted that Europe is navigating a system lacking adequate assurances to manage change responsibly, cautioning against a sense of fatalism.

Fidan highlighted the rise of protectionist policies and reliance on hard power, pointing to intensifying disputes and the increasingly blurred boundaries between peace and war.

He explained that modern threats now stretch well beyond conventional battlefields, with artificial intelligence and emerging technologies transforming the nature of conflict. According to him, those who successfully merge technological innovation with strategic planning will gain a decisive edge.

Turning to the Middle East, Fidan described Gaza as the region’s “bleeding wound.” He stated that as the second stage of the October ceasefire approaches, Türkiye is prepared to take on responsibilities in governance and reconstruction efforts.

He stressed that any peace initiative must ultimately lead to the creation of a sovereign Palestinian state, warning that breaches of international law have spread from Gaza into Lebanon, Syria, Iran, and other areas.

“Recently, we have seen this instability take on a new form,” Fidan said. “The Netanyahu government’s recognition of Somaliland is another manifestation of a strategy that exports instability by undermining the territorial integrity of regional countries.”
